The Sounds of Nightmares
The Lonely Way
At the end of the chapter, as the Counsellor cleans the mess in his office while pondering the events with Noone and the Ferryman, he becomes startled by the sound of a door opening. The Counsellor identified the person opening it to be Ethan, another child patient of the ward, who should not have been out of his room. Upon observing the boy's silent behavior, the Counsellor quickly determined that Ethan was sleepwalking, and who's dreams somehow led him to his office. The Counsellor then noted that if the boy was experiencing a "new symptom," then it could indicate something may have changed. Ethan notes the mess in the Counsellor's office, to which the Counsellor replies that he was looking for something, which he believed he has now found. As the Counsellor proceeds to take Ethan back to his room, he tells the boy how the two of them would dream over and over again, until they both sleep again anew. Before he leads Ethan out, he offers the boy a piece of candy.
Theories
- The Counsellor's comment to Ethan regarding finding something he was looking for might imply that with Noone now gone, he has set his eyes on Ethan as his next patient to continue his experiment in finding a path to the Nowhere.
Trivia
- Ethan's character was not given a voice, instead having his dialogue being created by the Counsellor clarifying the child's questions.
