...The Dummy's face crinkled, full of hate, wanting those cheers for himself.
— Noone

Mini-Kin,[1] also known as The Dummy,[2] is the third antagonist encountered in Little Nightmares III alongside the Kin. He, along with the Kin, are the main antagonists of The Carnevale chapter. He is also one of two main antagonists of the fourth chapter of The Sounds of Nightmares. He is the small accomplice of the Kin.

Profile

Appearance

Mini-Kin is neither made of plastic nor wood. He appears as a smaller man that sits on the lap of the Kin. Aside from his small body, the only features detailed are the hair on top of his lumpy face where a wide mouth had been carved out. Unlike the Kin, Mini-Kin has eyes. Both of them are bloodshot, his left eye is seemingly stuck up his socket. He has a long nose that reaches his mouth.

Personality

Noone sensed Mini-Kin held resentment towards the Performing Children, jealous of the praise they received and wanting the same cheers for himself.

In Little Nightmares III, Mini-Kin behaves like a rabid dog, chasing after the protagonists with agility on his two hands. His canine-like personality is further emphasised when begging the Kin for food, putting a dog bowl in his mouth and banging it on a table.

Story

The Sounds of Nightmares

Two of a Kind

Due to the lack of time in specifying his plan of escape, Rusty could only inform Noone that "They", Mini-Kin and the Kin, were the ones who forced him and his friends to perform without elaborating more details. During the show, Noone had the task of keeping watch for the Kin, but upon noticing his presence in the empty seat next to her, she was surprised to sense and feel two breaths, one from the man and the other from Mini-Kin sitting on his lap. Mini-Kin angrily watched Rusty perform, wishing that the audience's cheers were for himself. After noticing that Noone was being particularly quiet, he and the man turned their heads and asked her if she would like to be part of the show, although she is unsure if she actually heard them speak or if she heard their voices in her head.

After Rusty attempted to make his escape, Noone noticed that Mini-Kin was gone. She eventually spotted him at the top of the tent, his lumpy face waiting for Rusty. Just as the spotlight left Rusty, the doll lunged at him.

Little Nightmares III

Mini-Kin first appears with the Kin in their quarters. Both of them are asleep in front of a television. Low and Alone sneak past them, but to leave the room, they pull two planks of wood from the door, which wakes up Mini-Kin, who proceeds free himself from the Kin's arm and give chase. He searches for the two children in the next room, but the two were already hidden upon his arrival. Frustrated, he moves on to the next room.

In the next room over, he is observed on top of an operating table. He slams a dog bowl in his mouth on the table repeatedly, prompting the Kin to arrive to feed him. The Kin grabs a scalpel and amputates a piece of meat from a dead Herd member, feeding his flesh to Mini-Kin. As he eats, Low and Alone sneak past them and activate a meat grinder, distracting Mini-Kin and the Kin. While distracted, they both grab a crank, which they use to open a chute. The sound of their crank alerts Mini-Kin, who goes to investigate.

While making their way through a crawl space, Mini-Kin suddenly appears and begins to chase after them. They out-run him and leave the crawl space, making their way into an elevator, taking them to the next floor. Unfortunately, Low and Alone are cornered by the Kin on the next floor. They are both captured, but Alone manages to get out of her cage. Mini-Kin, who's watching the Kin write something, are distracted by Low, which allows Alone to move through the room to find a way to free Low. They become distracted by a Nome escaping from it's prison, chasing it out of the room. After rescuing Low, the two traverse the floorboards of the Kin's domain. They observe Mini-Kin desperately trying to grab at the Nome, guiding the Kin into a room where it is then killed. While the protagonists walk a few floors above them, the Kin and Mini-Kin can be seen moving from one room to another.

Low and Alone notice the two watching a child perform. They sneak past them while they are distracted. Two rooms later, they accidentally set off a fire alarm, causing the Kin and Mini-Kin to chase after them. Mini-Kin detatches itself to chase after them, and he has one final encounter with the two children as they try to escape on a hot air balloon. As he climbs up the side of the hot air balloon, he positioned himself next to the burner, ready to pounce. However, Low and Alone pull the lever connected to it, causing the Mini-Kin to catch on fire and fall to his death.

Strategy

Mini-Kin is an agile, child-sized Resident. While normally attatched to the right hand of the Kin, it can remove itself and proceed using its two arms to quickly crawl across the floor. Unlike the Kin, Mini-Kin is also able to chase Low and Alone under low surfaces and through ventilation. In order to be avoided, the protagonists must out run him or hide if cornered. During his final confrontation, Low and Alone must pull a lever connected to the hot air balloon's burner to ignite the Mini-Kin and defeat him.

Trivia

  • Although Rusty made Noone aware of the Kin before the performance began, he failed to warn her about Mini-Kin. This may be because the presence of the Kin also implied Mini-Kin's presence as well, with Rusty referring to the two as "They," rather than individually.
  • Ventriloquism is a performing act that involves making an inanimate object appear as though they are talking. The dolls that ventriloquists use to do this are called "dummies," which is likely what Mini-Kin is meant to be. Homever, the Kin treats him more as a "pet".
  • Mini-Kin is a literal representation of the phrase ''right-hand man''
    • It is possible that Mini-Kin serves as the Kin's eyesight, as the bigger Resident lacks any visible eyes.
  • In The Sounds of Nightmares, Mini-Kin and the Kin share the same theme with the Patients from Little Nightmares II, that being Still Life.
  • Early concept art shows that Mini-Kin was originally going to have legs.
    • Portraits depicting Mini-Kin with legs can be found in the Carnevale.
    • Mini-Kin's outfit texture has pants that go unused.
