| — Myra |
Myra Wan is a protagonist in the comic series Descent to Nowhere. She's a detective who accepts to investigate the cases of the vanished children one more time before she could take her own life.
Profile[]
Background[]
Growing up, Myra loved the Counties. For twenty years, she lived her life as a detective investigating "The Milk Carton Cases", cases that surrounded the vanishing children of the Counties, whose faces were printed on milk cartons. Although she was initially convinced she could make a difference, years of being a cog in a system has left her sick of feeling like a puppet. Having grown tired and disillusioned with life, Myra feels lost, unable to bare the lack of interest in others in a place that continues to lose order.
Appearance[]
Myra is an adult woman, her height 5'5[2]. Myra's black hair is unevenly cut, resembling a bob haircut.
At the start of the comic and in the police department, Myra is shown wearing a trench coat with short sleeves, trousers and boots. Under her trench coat, she wears a tank top.
Personality[]
Myra is shown to have a desire to help and bring justice, given that she joined the detective and police department hoping to make a difference in the Counties. When conducting detective work, Myra prefers to take time to get to know the person she is investigating, to better understand and see the world as they had, allowing her to better piece their story. Her keen intuition allows her to find clues and make connection not previously though of, claiming that if she does not check on something it will remain in her mind.
However, the constant failures and little changes in the Counties led to her depression, turning Myra into a drug addict. Despite being fed up with the people of the Counties who choose to ignore the strangeness around them, she holds respect for the little good others try to do, as she internally comments on Marion's attempt to help her during her suicide attempt in comparison to others who willingly chose to ignore her and pass by. Having lost her determination to make a difference, she became unwilling to keep helping and doesn't believe she can do much, mentioning that she doesn't have a light on inside and is not interested in helping Marion until he makes a deal with her. While she is willing to cooperate, she can become short tempered towards others who interfere with her work, as shown by her becoming willing to resign from her position after an argument with Chief Downes.
Despite this short moment of unwillingness, Myra still cares about helping others as she immediately decides to take the jump and find Hush, no matter who she is, as soon as she hears of the disappearance.
Story[]
Descent to Nowhere[]
Issue 1[]
On a quiet cold winter morning, Myra finds herself standing at the edge of the Counties bridge, although she does not remember how she got there, she is ready to do what she wanted while no one is around, until a sudden encounter with a stranger eating a lollipop approaches her. He asks if she can see through the eye tattoo on the back of her neck and introduces himself as another office who knew Myra from their line of work. He tries to sway her to stand down from the bridge, a trick Myra recognizes is taught to law enforcements to deal with jumpers.
Myra decides to return later to the bridge and allows Marion to come over to her home. There, the man asks her to help him investigate the cases of the vanished children once more, saying he knows where to start but that he can only rely on Myra for this case. Myra is doubtful at first, but Marion puts on a condition that should they fail, he'll return her to the bridge and jump with her, which she accepts.
The next morning, Myra goes to the police station to ask the Chief about the files of the cases of the vanished children, as she believes them to be linked to a homicide she was previously investigating. The Chief however refuses despite her efforts and suspends her. Myra however, decides to resign instead. As she packs her office up, Marion enters the room and informs her of a lead he uncovered about a child who vanished the previous night from the Counties Psychiatric Institute.
Issue 2[]
In the Counties Psychiatric Institute, Myra and Marion are investigating Hush's disappearance. They're questioning a nurse named Akedia, who tells them the whole story as far as she knows. Hush's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Kay, became Sleepers and the girl along with her brother were left unsupervised. The kids were trampled by horses and Hush was hospitalized while the brother was killed. After listening to the story, Myra questions how can they find something if they don't know what to call it. The two leave the Copy, heading to Mrs. Kay's Estate.
In the Estate, Myra comments on the appearance of the home, thinking its murmuring floorboards, sobbing pipes and nickering horses echo Hush's story. The two leave and head to Josef Kay's apartment, where they find all the records of the things the father sold and traded all over the Counties. The two figure out that Hush was not the parents' favorite, and the girl was mistreated.
The two head to the Sunrise hotel, which Myra doesn't think highly of. Myra comments on how vague the old reports of the missing children are, stating how difficult connecting Hush's case will be. While listening to Marion's theories about the missing children, Myra finds a mask under the couch of their hotel room. She decides to go back to Mr. Kay's apartment, hoping to find something despite not knowing what that is. She avoids a cop and climbs a ladder up to enter the apartment. She figures that kids hide things, saying it's in their nature. She herself used to hide a submarine the color of the moonlight in a closet so nobody else could find it in her lost years. Myra checks under a bed and finds a doll of a man with a trench coat and a fishing hat. Myra recognizes this figure but can't remember why nor where she saw it. On the doll, is a piece of paper with the word ''Hush'' written on it. She deduces that's what the parents called the little girl.
Back to the Sunrise, Myra stays outside for a while before entering, until Marion comes to check on her. He walks her back inside and informs her that Chief Downes had called. He mentions her anger and that she wants to see both of them in her office as fast as possible. Myra starts to feel like she's suffocating and runs to hide in the bathroom. She thinks back on Marion's promise that everything would go differently, but she still feels like she has no control. Myra takes out her drugs.
Suddenly, Myra sees a memory or dream that she recognizes as not hers. There, she sees the face of the Ferryman. Meanwhile, Marion is trying to call out to her in the bathroom, but Myra remains unresponsive.
Trivia[]
- Myra is the first and so far only protagonist in the Little Nightmares franchise who is not a child.
- The inspiration behind Myra's character was the desire to see a kind of detective who is messy and fallible, but still a child at heart[2].
- During the second issue, Myra states she recognizes the face of the Ferryman, but can't remember where she saw him, suggesting that Myra could have met the Ferryman during her childhood.
