Ruse's Nanny was a family member of Ruse in the Counties. An elderly woman from Ruse's neighborhood, who loved Ruse and every child in the neighborhood too much. She was the last person Ruse interacted with before traveling to the Nowhere, becoming the only person in Ruse's life she could still properly remember, but was someone whom Ruse realized was not what she appeared.

Profile[]

Background[]

Ruse's Nanny lived her life in the Counties and seemingly loved every child in her neighborhood along with Ruse, earning their trust enough to make them feel safe to come over to her home. However, on one particular night, she attempted to murder Ruse and two other children from the neighborhood in her pool. She would succeed in killing the two other children and left their deceased bodies floating in her pool, causing the smell of chlorine and nightshade to fill the air. She would watch from nearby as Ruse stayed at the edge of the pool, willingly attempting to jump in on her own. She beckoned Ruse to move forward into the pool. After Ruse willingly sank herself to the bottom of the pool and then tried to swim back to the surface, she entered the water and immediately made attempts to drown Ruse, pushing Ruse down into the water, but before she could complete the task of drowning Ruse, Ruse disappeared and traveled to the Nowhere. Whatever happened to her after Ruse disappeared remains unknown.

Personality[]

Ruse's Nanny was at first described to be gentle and loving, gaining many of the children's trust and was even viewed as someone Ruse felt she could completely rely on in her lonely life. However, as Ruse recounts her memories of the elderly woman, her caring persona is described to have hidden her true manipulative and murderous personality.

Story[]

The Lonely Ones[]

Chapter 2[]

Ruse's Nanny is first mentioned as Ruse, Feast and Mim are trying to escape the Centipede. As she walks with the others in a cavernous space, she notices large translucent eggs shells and shed skin resembling the Centipede's segments, reminding her of the brittle pieces left by the bugs who shed their skin in her Nanny’s garden, beside the swimming pool. Ruse shivers at the memory.

Chapter 3[]

Ruse's Nanny is mentioned once again as Ruse is being flashed memories of her life before her eyes. Even if she can't consider those memories and can't even remember her parents, she mentions that she can't forget her Nanny.

Chapter 4[]

Ruse notices a pool in the backyard while in the Backstage, where a figure hiding in the shadows gestures her to move forward and sink in the water. This is a call-back to the night Ruse decided to jump in her Nanny's pool.

Chapter 8[]

As Ruse is trying to save Feast from the Ball Pit Monster, the exhausting process of movement reminds her of her Nanny's pool. She remembers how she sinked at the bottom and tried to go back to the surface, but something was physically holding her back, trying to keep her in the water.

Later, after Ruse and Feast got out of the Ball Pit, Ruse thinks back of when she jumped in her Nanny's pool again, saying she fearlessly jumped in because she had nothing to lose. She compares it to her jump in the Ball Pit, thinking that jumping into it was harder for her.

Chapter 10[]

As Ruse thinks about how she wanted a place where she felt like she belonged, she realizes that such a place never existed. She wonders if that's why she jumped in her Nanny's pool that night, but it uncertain due to her memories not being clear. Whatever her reason for jumping was, Ruse is happy that her decision led her to Feast and Mim.

Trivia[]

  • "Nanny" is an informal way of referring to one's grandmother.
  • It is heavily implied that the figure who encouraged Ruse to enter the pool and the figure in the pool who forcibly pushed Ruse down into the water after she attempting to swim to the surface, was Ruse's Nanny.
  • Ruse's Nanny lived in a yellow clapboard house with a blue door, above the door a lantern hanged. In the backyard of her home was a swimming pool along with a garden beside the pool. In her garden were brittle pieces of shed skin from bugs Ruse would sometimes find.
