The Carnival People[1] are characters that appear in the fourth chapter of The Sounds of Nightmares. They are a crowd of monstrous disfigured humanoids that attended the Performing Children's show in the Big Top tent.

Appearances

The Carnival People are described as being the wrong shape, with faces like bad drawing come to life. Their plump bodies filled the entire seats, all the while crushing and spilling into one another.

The Sounds of Nightmares

Two of a Kind

Moments before the performance began in the Big Top tent, Noone describes seeing a large crowd pour into the room, horrified by their monstrous and abnormal appearance. One of them sat down in a seat to her left and began eating a candy apple that stank horribly, with a center that was mushy and raw. She witnessed them sitting down in seats too big for them, each stuffing their faces with rancid snacks.

During the show, the crowd appeared to be very pleased with the various acts put on by the Performing Children, cheering and clapping as the show went on. Near the final act, the crowd cheered as they watched Rusty make it across the rope, and continued cheering as he climbed to the top of the tent, where the Dummy awaited.

Trivia

  • The Carnival People are very similar to that of the Guests and the Bathers. All of these characters are bloated and disfigured groups of monstrous humanoids only seen indulging themselves in the locations that they are present.
  • It is unknown if these characters have any connection to the Fairgoers, as they both share similar locations and physical descriptions.
  • In the episode The Lonely Way, Noone mentions how the Puppet is dressed like the Carnival People.
