The Counties is part of the human world and is the primary location of The Sounds of Nightmares podcast. While not much is known about the location, it does have a school for children, a ward, and an apartment complex with a polluted stream nearby.

Components

The Counties Psychiatric Institute

The Counties Psychiatric Institute is the main base of operations in the Sounds of Nightmares series, it is where the Counsellor works to try and help solve Noone's Nightmare Disorder. Over thousands of children have been admitted to the institute to receive aid. While some children are kept under constant watch while being confined to their room, other children are free to leave their rooms on their own to wander the facility. The facility is comprised of multiple floors, including a basement floor with a window view to the outside.

In The Lonely Way, Noone awoke in the south-wing court yard, implying that the facility contains more than one.

The Session Room

Not much is known about the institute, other than the room that The Counsellor interviews Noone in. In The Workers in the Walls, it was revealed that this room has a painting known as The Zaheer's Gaze, which depicts an astrolabe, a device used to locate positions in time and space.

In Two of a Kind, it was revealed that this room was located in the basement. Despite its tedious location, the room has a window to look into the outside.

Noone's Room

It was revealed in The Theater of the Mind that Noone sleeps somewhere in this location, and is monitored by the Counsellor.

The Reunion Room

In Two of a Kind, the Counsellor brought Noone to witness the reunion room, where rehabilitated kids were reunited with their families and permitted to mingle with other rehabilitated children while eating cake. Noone watched them through a two-way mirror, but despite her request to join them, Otto explained that it was not permitted for in patients to mingle with the rehabilitated children.

Otto's Room

In A Deluge of the Inevitable, the Counsellor brought Noone to a room where he would sleep during shifts. Here, he blindfolds himself to attempt to enter a self induced hypnagogia so he can have Noone project her dream into his head. Noone also spots a picture of Cici in this room.

South Wing Courtyard

In The Lonely Way, The Counsellor mentions how Noone reappeared in the south wing courtyard of the institute after her longest disappearance.

Ethan's Room

In The Lonely Way, The Counsellor tells another patient, Ethan, that he shouldn't be out of his room, before realizing the boy was sleepwalking. Otto offers him candy before sending him back to his room.

The Hate Field

The Hate Field is an area in the Counties where cone mushrooms grow. These mushrooms have similar appearance to the Nomes from Noone's dream in A Deluge of the Inevitable.

Trivia

  • Other than the Threshold, the Counties is the only known location in the franchise that is not located in the Nowhere.
  • In A Deluge of the Inevitable, the Counsellor points out the ugly Autumn weather outside, with the broadcast calling the strange weather a “swirling mist." This apparently is a unique weather phenomenon to the Counties, which indicates that a heavy rain is not far off.
