The Dummy[1] is one of two main antagonists of fourth chapter of The Sounds of Nightmares. He is a small character and an accomplice of the Man in the Purple Suit.
Appearance
The Dummy is neither made of plastic or wood, it appears as a smaller man that sits on the lap of the Man in the Purple Suit. aside form his small body, the only features detailed are the hair on top of his lumpy face where a wide mouth had been carved out. Unlike the Man in the Purple Suit, the Dummy had eyes. His face crinkled at the sight of Rusty receiving praise for his performance.
Personality
Noone sensed the Dummy held resentment towards the performing children, jealousy of the praise they received and wanting the same cheers for himself.
The Sounds of Nightmares
Two of a Kind
Due to the lack of time in specifying his plan of escape, Rusty could only inform Noone that "They", the Dummy and the Man in the Purple Suit, were the ones who forced him and his friends to perform without elaborating more details. During the show, Noone had the task of keeping watch for the Man in the Purple Suit, but upon noticing his presence in the empty seat next to her, she was surprised to sense and feel two breaths, one from the man and the other from Dummy sitting on his lap. The Dummy angrily watched Rusty perform, wishing that the audience's cheers were for himself. After noticing that Noone was being particularly quiet, he and the man turned their heads and asked her if she would like to be part of the show, although she is unsure if she actually heard them speak or if she heard their voices in her head.
After Rusty attempted to make his escape, Noone noticed that the Dummy was gone. She eventually spotted him at the top of the tent, his lumpy face waiting for Rusty. Just as the spotlight left Rusty, the doll lunged at him.
Theories
- It is speculated the Dummy was once a performance piece that was incapable of pleasing the crowd through it's act alone, eventually being forced to sit on the sidelines and grow a great deal of jealousy and hatred towards the human performer's who received a greater praise from the crowd than it ever could.
Trivia
- Although Rusty made Noone aware of the Man in the Purple Suit before the performance began, he failed to warn her about the Dummy. This may be because the presence of the Man in the Purple Suit also implied the Dummy's presence as well, with Rusty referring to the two as "They," rather than individually.
- Ventriloquism is a performing act that involves making an inanimate object appear as though they are talking. The dolls that ventriloquists use to do this are called "dummies," which is likely what the Dummy is meant to be.
- The Dummy and The Man in the Purple Suit share the same theme with The Patients from Little Nightmares II, that being Still Life.
