Her presence alone told that she was the keeper of the Stone Giant, or the world beyond the walls.
— Noone

The Jailer[1] (Also known as The Tall Woman [2], or simply the Woman), is the main antagonist of the first chapter of the audio-fiction series, The Sounds of Nightmares and the Descent to Nowhere comics. She is the keeper of the Stone Giant.

Profile

Appearance

Noone describes the Jailer as a tall woman figure wearing a familiar, nun-like dress with long, heavy chains coming out from under its tail. Noone described the Jailer's face as equally old and young, with her skin stretching back so tight that only her eyes appeared to look human. Her tight skin made it possible for only a sliver of her mouth to be able to open. Her mouth was filled with blackened teeth.

Story

The Sounds of Nightmares

The Workers in the Walls

Noone first saw the Jailer through a crack in the wall of the Stone Giant. She was seen in a workshop working on half-made "projects" made of wood and metal, also having all kinds of straps and cranks attached to them. The Jailer hummed to herself as Noone watched her tinkering away. On the shelves of the woman's workshop was a collection of masks with nails and spikes on them, positioned to fit perfectly into a mouth. Noone described how she moaned in enjoyment, and how she theorized that the Jailer had been tinkering in her workshop for hours. Noone eventually saw the Jailer's face as she turned to a pile of scraps.

At the end of the chapter, while in a courtyard, the Jailer leapt down from above them and used one of the chains from under her dress to capture the Child with Gooey Hair. As the Child cried to Noone for help, the Jailer spotted her and began to approach her. Upon inching closer and closer to Noone, the woman opened her mouth, when suddenly Noone woke up.

Descent to Nowhere

Issue 1

The Jailer first appears watching over the Stone Giant.

After Hush defeats a Guard and frees herself and Mono from their cells, the two hear the Jailer coming. They run to hide, but Mono abandons the girl, catching the attention of the Resident. The Jailer screeches and tries to attack Mono with her chains, failing as the boy manages to outrun them and escape the room, causing the Jailer to yell in frustration. Now on her own, Hush makes her own escape from the Jailer as well.

Issue 3

As Hush is exploring the Stone Giant, she hears the Jailer's chains making noise, indicating her arrival. The girl hides under a bench, where she sees the Jailer dragging Mono away on the floor.

Trivia

  • Both the Jailer and the Granny share the same theme, that being Surface Tension.
  • Noone states the Jailer's presence alone told she was the keeper of the Stone Giant.
  • Noone described the Jailer as being hungry for something that was deep inside of her (Noone).
  • The Jailer's consumption of the black substance from the leeches may be the reason for her black teeth in Noone's description of her.
    • Despite this, her teeth appear white in the comic.
