Noticing that I wasn’t cheering, the man turned. He had no eyes. But I felt him look at me. How can someone with no eyes look at you?
— Noone

The Kin[1], also known as The Man in the Purple Suit[2], is the third antagonist encountered in Little Nightmares III alongside Mini-Kin. He, along with Mini-Kin, are the main antagonists of The Carnevale chapter. He is also one of two main antagonists of the fourth chapter of The Sounds of Nightmares.

Profile

Appearance

The Kin appears to be a slender humanoid with a disproportionally large head. He has a small patch of hair on the top of his head. He wears a purple suit that sags over his body and a red bow-tie. In his right hand is the Mini-Kin, a small dummy-like humanoid.

Personality

The Kin is an enigmatic character whose occupation involves enslaving children. He is very aware of his surroundings, his attention being drawn to Noone in particular when she was not cheering for the final act. Although Noone could hear his voice amidst the crowd's loud cheers and claps, she was unsure if he spoke or if she heard his voice in her head. Despite his threatening presence, The Kin is not quick to attack Noone or take her by force, he instead smiles and offers her a chance to be part of the show. As the crowd cheered for Mini-Kin at the top of the tent, the Kin grew shy, both loving the praise and regretting the attention.

His role as an enslaver is emphasised as he is seen trying to capture the protagonists, locking them in cages in Little Nightmares III. The Kin is shown to be cruel, especially towards the Herd, his domain being surrounded by their corpses. While traveling through the floorboards, Low and Alone witness him snapping the neck of a Nome cowering in the corner.

The Kin seems a lot more calm and collected than Mini-Kin and other Residents, calmly walking towards the protagonists when alerted, along with being one of the few Residents who don't make any noise after noticing one of the children.

Story

The Sounds of Nightmares

Two of a Kind

The Kin was first brought up by Rusty. However due to the lack of time on the Ferris wheel, Rusty could not provide a detailed description, only informing her that "They", the Kin and his Dummy, were the ones responsible for forcing him and his friends to perform. Although Noone agreed to act as watcher, it was not until moments before the performance began that she was only informed that their tormentor wore a purple suit.

During the show, while keeping a lookout, Noone was unable to spot the Kin throughout the start of the performance, then momentarily lost track of her duty as she became amazed by the performer's acts. During the final act, the Kin appeared in the empty seat to her right. She described hearing his breathing before she saw him, but was horrified to learn she could hear and feel two breaths. When Noone didn't cheer during the performance, the man turned to look at her. Noone questioned how it was possible for someone like him to be capable of looking at her, when he had no eyes to begin with. She eventually noticed Mini-Kin on his lap, breathing heavily, which caused her to become more uncomfortable. They eventually both turned to her and asked if she would like to be part of the show.

Just as Rusty made his escape, Noone looked over at the now limp man and noticed that Mini-Kin was gone. She looked over at the man one last time and saw he was breathing once again before her nightmares ended.

Little Nightmares III

The Kin makes a brief cameo at the beginning of the chapter, his silhouette being seen behind a tent as he listens to a radio.

The Kin makes his official debut during the second part of the Carnevale level. He and Mini-Kin are first encountered in a room in which they are sleeping in front of a television. After Low and Alone make noise while removing planks of wood to create an opening for themselves, he and Mini-Kin wake, with Mini-Kin detatching from his arm to pursue them. Two rooms later, the Kin is seen amputating a piece of a dead Herd member to feed to his hungry accomplice.

Some time later, Low and Alone have their first official confrontation with the Kin after exiting an elevator. Once the doors open, Mini-Kin crawls onto his arm, and they are captured. After imprisoning the two children, the Kin tended a few things around the room while Alone, whose cage had not been fully secured, sneaks around him. He and Mini-Kin become distracted by a Nome falling to the ground after breaking free of it's jar-prison. They are seen later while Low and Alone traverse the floorboards, being led after the Nome by Mini-Kin. Once they catch up to it, the Kin snaps its neck and leaves it slumped over on Mini-Kin's bowl. While Low and Alone walk across a piece of wood three floors off of the ground, the Kin and Mini-Kin can be seen on the first floor moving to a room on their right. When Low and Alone make it to this room, they find a distracted Kin watching a child perform. They manage to sneak around them while they are distracted, although the Kin is at one point alerted by a noise Low made mistakenly. The Kin and Mini-Kin are alerted to their presence following the sound of a fire alarm set off by the two protagonists. They give chase, separating from one another for more efficiency.

During the chase, the Kin arrives at the end of a hallway, opening a door and chasing after the two until they reach an area blocked off by boards. As he struggles to remove them, they escape into a room with a locked door. The Kin is once again frustrated as he bangs on the door until it breaks open. Before he can catch them, they escape onto a hot air balloon. Enraged, he goes back into the building and returns with a shot gun, which he begins to fire at them, but to no avail.

Strategy

The Kin and Mini Kin are able to pursue Low and Alone separately, much like the The Twin Chefs from Little Nightmares. However, the two move at different speeds, with the Kin's pursuit being slow, and Mini-Kin's pursuit being very quick and fast. However, Mini-Kin will pursues Low and Alone in ventilation, so they must escape from him.

During his final chase, the player will have to outrun him and clear their path with their weapons before he can catch up to Low and Alone.

Trivia

  • In The Sounds of Nightmares, the Kin and Mini-Kin share the same theme with the Patients from Little Nightmares II, that being Still Life.
  • The Kin is the second antagonist in the game series to use a weapon, with the first being the Hunter from Little Nightmares II.
    • The Kin uses a shotgun similar to that of the Hunter's near the end of the Carnevale chapter.
