Noticing that I wasn’t cheering, the man turned. He had no eyes. But I felt him look at me. How can someone with no eyes look at you?
— Noone

The Man in the Purple Suit[1] is one of two main antagonists of the fourth chapter of The Sounds of Nightmares.

Appearance

The Man in the Purple Suit was described as a being a sort-of ringmaster that wore a purple suit. When he looked at Noone, she detailed that he had no eyes, yet she felt as if he was still able to see her. On his lap sits The Dummy.

Personality

The Man in the Purple Suit is an enigmatic character who's occupation involves enslaving children. He is very aware of his surroundings, his attention being drawn to Noone in particular when she was not cheering for the final act. Although Noone could hear his voice amidst the crowd's loud cheers and claps, she was unsure if he spoke or if she heard his voice in her head. Despite his threatening presence, The Man in the Purple Suit is not quick to attack Noone or take her by force, he instead smiles and offers her a chance to be part of the show.

As the crowd cheered for the Dummy at the top of the tent, the Man in the Purple Suit grew shy, both loving the praise and regretting the attention.

The Sounds of Nightmares

Two of a Kind

The Man in the Purple Suit was first brought up by Rusty. However due to the lack of time on the Ferris wheel, Rusty could not provide a detailed description, only informing her that "They", the Man in the Purple Suit and his Dummy, were the ones responsible for forcing him and his friends to perform. Although Noone agreed to act as watcher, it was not until moments before the performance began that she was only informed that their tormentor wore a purple suit

During the show, while keeping a lookout, Noone was unable to spot the man throughout the start of the performance, then momentarily lost track of her duty as she became amazed by the performer's acts. During the final act, the Man in the Purple Suit appeared in the empty seat to her right. She described hearing his breathing before she saw him, but was horrified to learn she could hear and feel two breaths. When Noone didn't cheer during the performance, the man turned to look at her. Noone questioned how it was possible for someone like him to be capable of looking at her, when he had no eyes to begin with. She eventually noticed the Dummy on his lap, breathing heavily, which caused her to become more uncomfortable. They eventually both turned to her and asked if she would like to be part of the show.

Just as Rusty made his escape, Noone looked over at the now limp man and noticed that the Dummy was gone. She looked over at the man one last time and saw he was breathing once again before her nightmares ended.

Theories

  • The presence of the Dummy on the man's lap and Noone's remarks about the man's complexion at the end of the show may imply that the man was former a ventriloquist who's main act was the Dummy. It is also entirely possible that the Dummy didn't do well with audiences form the beginning, and so they resorted to making the children perform for their shows.

Trivia

  • At the end of her nightmare, Noone described the man as having grew shy, loving the attention but regretting the praise.
  • It is unknown whether or not the man and the Dummy are partners in crime or if the man is working for the Dummy.
  • In the episode The Lonely Way, Noone describes spotting a purple suit in the Clothing Room.
  • The Man in the Purple Suit and The Dummy share the same theme with The Patients from Little Nightmares II, that being Still Life.
