— The Naughty Kids

The Naughty Kids[1] are a group of supporting antagonists that appear in the fifth chapter of The Sounds of Nightmares.

Appearances

Not much is known about the appearance of the Naughty Kids, only that there are many boys and girls as Noone is able to hear them through the storm drains and see them trying to take a peek at her, their lights shining down from every drain. Of the many, Noone details a boy wearing dirty boots with a lantern on his waist.

Personalities

Noone described the children as having "bratty excitement" for an event that only happens once a year, which was a giant title wave that swept away everything in its path. They all seem to be somewhat sadistic, reveling in the suffering of anyone in the sewer below them, including Noone. Although they were unable to experience the waves power for themselves, they took great joy by watching it from afar.

The Sounds of Nightmares

A Deluge of the Inevitable

Noone first heard a child struggling to shut a grand iron door, their keys jangling along with the screeching metal of the door. She heard laughter before the door finally closed shut. Noone later spotted another child through a storm drain high above her. Although they locked eyes, the boy held no interest in helping her, instead referring to her as a "critter" after he spotted her, all the while alerting the other children above of her presence. Soon after the boy alerted the others, lights from the lanterns of numerous boys and girls shined down through the various storm drains, all eager to take a peek at her. Very suddenly, they all went quiet for a moment as a rumbling was heard through the tunnels. The children whispered with excitement, "it's here. Finally here", before running off. After Noone encounters a small creature, a girl appeared in a nearby drain grate, giggling with ugly delight as she stuck her whole arm through the grate, attempting to capture the small creature with a crooked net she had lowered down. Unsettled by the girl, Noone throws a brick at the girl's arm, causing her to cry out. Later, after Noone momentarily stops amidst her attempts to lose the Balloon-Headed Man in the tunnels, the Naughty Kids appeared once again high above her, shining their lanterns all at once as they spotted her and the small creature. The Naughty Kids chanted, "Snatch a gift, snatch a gift, before they're all sent adrift!", attracting the attention of the Balloon-Headed Man. The Naughty Kids cheers grew as a rumbling signaled the arrival of a giant wave running through the tunnels, sweeping everything in its path. The Naughty Kids rushed to snatch things that ran from the waves path as part of their celebration for its arrival.

As Noone comes across the Balloon-Headed Man one last time, she reveals the Naughty Kids wanted what the man had, but could never have for themselves.

Trivia

  • Noone described the Naughty Kids and the Balloon-Headed Man as wanting what the other had, but could never have for themselves.
  • It is unknown whether or not the Naughty Kids came from the real world, or if they're native to the Nowhere.
