The Threshold[1] (called the Halfway Place by Noone) is a space located between the real world and the Nowhere. It serves as the final location of audio-fiction series, The Sounds of Nightmares.
Description
The Threshold is a transition point between the human world and the Nowhere. While here, Noone felt both awake and asleep at the same time. The Threshold is filled with a dark mist that Noone describes as something that "only half-exists." The darkness is so intense, she could not see her own hand in front of her, but eventually watches the dark mist part to reveal her body piece by piece. While in this space, Noone had the sensation that she was both sinking and floating. Any sense of direction is lost while in this space, but regardless of not knowing what direction she was looking at, be it up or down, she could see bright twinkling stars, brighter than any normal stars, however, Noone later realizes the stars were all shining eyes. Any sense of time is additionally lost as Noone describes herself feeling as if she had been going through the dark mist for ages, but not feeling tired at all. Despite having passed through the Threshold many times, Noone has no real recollection of it throughout her previous travels to the Nowhere, she can only recall stepping out of the dark and watching it dissipate before finally encountering a new location in the Nowhere. In episode 6, Noone remembers being in the Threshold with the Ferryman, who would guide her through the darkness while holding her hand. Within the Threshold, a door leading to the Nowhere can be found.
Components
The Door
Somewhere within the Threshold, a door leading to the Nowhere can be found. No matter where Noone turned, the door was always straight in front of her, inching closer and closer to her. The door is ancient, the color of twilight, while the material itself remains questionable as it is comprised of solid wood or a liquid, yet both at the same time. The door has no knob, only the shape of an eye at the center.
Behind the door, Noone is able to hear a voice just like her own, telling her to come inside. As the door opens, the Candleman waits for Noone, welcoming her to the other side. Upon peering at what is past the door, one will see stairs going in every direction at once. Aside from the stairs, a giant red pulsing eye the size of a moon can also be found, along with rings and millions of shining eyes circling around the giant eye, all of which Noone described to be staring down at her, pleased by what they see. The door eventually changes to present to Noone an image of children with blurry faces. Eventually, Noone passes through the door and watches on as the giant moon opens, with smoke the shape of fingers mixing with the blinking eyes, before everything finally goes dark.
Trivia
- Although it has not been confirmed, it is heavily implied that the mist-filled nightmares that Six and Mono witness before the beginnings of their respective games was them recounting their travel through the Threshold.
- The Threshold is the only known location in the series not to exist in either the Counties or the Nowhere.
- Noone reveals she had been in the Threshold before, with the Candleman.
- The Candleman's riddles involving sinking and floating most likely refer to the sinking and floating feelings that Noone felt while in the Threshold.
- The Candleman hinted to Otto of another way to cross the Threshold, stating that a quarter will be granted after a toll is paid.
- Near the end of chapter 6, as Noone realizes the darkness has not dissipated like in her previous travels to the Nowhere, she realizes her body had attempted to warn her that "It" hides in the darkness, but does not feel any sense of panic or need to resist upon coming to the realization.
