The television featuring the woman popularly known as "Veronica."
The Veronica TV Song (unofficial title) is a popular song that is heard several times in the Little Nightmares games. The song is first heard on one of the stations on a television that Six uses to distract the Janitor in Little Nightmares. While the song plays, a two frames of a realistic woman (seen at the right) that is seemingly stationed in a kitchen are displayed. In Little Nightmares II, two Bullies can be heard singing the same song while playing jump rope. The song can also be heard playing from TVs in the Pale City.
The song's melody was initially interpreted to be derived from a nursery rhyme titled "I Tell Me Ma,"[1] or the lost nursery rhyme know simply as "The Singing Street," [2] sung by children skipping rope in an old Edinburgh video dating back to the 1950s, the lyrics of which have remained a mystery to this day and are interpreted a number of ways throughout the world.
Lyrics
Note: These lyrics are not officially recognized, but rather they are a popular interpretation. Credit to ItsJustJord on YouTube for coming up with these lyrics.
Having a nightmare in a boat,
come with me, oh no, no, no,
he hung, he hung, he hung,
don't leave me,
no more bellman among the sea.
Hello, hello,
we're lonely,
help her, help her,
and we'll see,
my way, my way,
and you'll see,
a Halo ascending him above our sea.
Come, fun,
here comes Veronica,
come, come,
he cut Veronica,
run, run,
here comes Veronica,
sent on a ferry upon our sea.
Theories
- One of the most popular theories at the time of speculating the song's lyrics was that the song revolved around the Wax Bellman. The reason for this was because some of the lyrics were interpreted to say, "he hung" and "no more bellman among the sea." These lyrics were further believed to be connected to the Wax Bellman as he was presented in a concept art being hung by a noose.
- The final line was popularly interpreted as "ferry" and was commonly theorized to have some connection to the Ferryman, as it was established in the 2017 Little Nightmares comic series, that this is the character who brings children to the Maw .
Trivia
- When questioned by a user's now-deleted post about "The Veronica Song", the official Little Nightmares Twitter page simply states, "Veronica is an illusion,"[3] revealing that the lyrics fans uncovered, as well as the name "Veronica", were simply the result of interpreting something that was never truly real.
- Izmar, the official Little Nightmares Twitter page manager, had spoken to the audio director, Tobias Lilja, about the lyrics fans uncovered within the song, before posting on the official Twitter page about Veronica being an illusion. According to Tobias, there are no words within the Little Nightmares world, only sounds, "sounds that are being sung are phonemes meant to strike the ear like language, but they aren't words in any existing human language."[6][7][8]
- Despite disproving "the Veronica Song" theory, Izmar states the fans are free to have fun and imagine a world where the Veronica Song is real.
- Despite its popularity, this song is not recognized among any of the official Little Nightmares soundtracks.
