Echo is a character created by user Robinlmfaoo on an unknown date somewhere in October 2023. She also serves as a supporting character in user ScoobyZee’s story featuring the Wiki people and user BlueTheLittleNightmare6464’s AU story, “Echo’s Call.”
Echo is a child with supernatural abilities. She does not have much story content to her just yet, but we do know she is a child from the real world who came into The Nowhere when tired of her monotone and aimless school life, and that she is currently on a journey with a mysterious friend, by the name of [REDACTED].
Description[]
A fervent daydreamer, Echo gets by on scraps of her own fantasy, pacified by the enamoring visions of The Otherside. She won’t get away with it for much longer, though. There’s no such thing as a dream in her world, and The Nowhere will make sure she knows full well of it.
The failure of a hopeful experiment, Echo lives, abandoned in her own little void, unsure if the world around her is real, or if she even is real. She hasn’t slept in days, terrified of the prospect of tomorrow. But what even is tomorrow? When was today? Did she just ask herself a question? What century is it?…
A girl in a blue pinafore who does not see the point of living in this world anymore. She longs for a friend.
Appearance[]
Echo is a pale-skinned, scrawny asian girl with dark, long hair reaching a little past her shoulders that is described as oily, tangled and uncombed. It covers most of her face except for her nose and mouth. She can also tie this hair up, upon doing that the player will discover she wears glasses and has acne on her face. Her most striking trait is the blue school pinafore she wears, with nothing underneath but for a white camisole, shorts and underwear. She wears a faded white school sock on her left foot, and a bright yellow sou’wester. She carries a large blue umbrella with her which she uses for various purposes, and a deep blue rucksack which “used to be her school bag”, and a large metal sewing needle which she uses as a weapon/spear, which she ties to her pinafore’s belt when not in use.
Personality[]
Like most of the other characters in Little Nightmares, Echo does not speak, instead her personality is shown through her actions. She is described as being “unable to bring herself to care much about anything because she is so tired; the only thing keeping her going is her instinct to survive.” This can also be inferred from the statement stating that “she does not see the point of living in the world anymore”, possibly indicating she has a severe lack of will to live. Despite this, deep inside she “longs for a friend”, whom she will “hold fast to and do anything for if found.” It is also mentioned that Echo fears the concept of tomorrow, though this has not been entirely expanded upon yet.
She is shown to have a degree of compassion despite her lack of energy, as shown when she flinches at the dead Viewers she sees in the street, as well as offering a hug to [REDACTED] when he shows sadness and fear. Echo is also very reluctant to kill any monsters that come her way, having to rely on [REDACTED] to help her do the honors instead. She is also protective when it comes to friends, and cherishes them, as shown when she persists in helping [REDACTED] out of the Signal Tower even when shown very clear dislike and distrust, and how she reflexively puts her arm out in front of [REDACTED] whenever she hears a loud sound.
Echo is also described as very forgetful, unaware, and “constantly in her own world”, as shown when [REDACTED] has to slap and shake her out of her trance as she stared in awe at the looming Signal Tower, and numerous times when she failed to notice the presence of danger when [REDACTED] did (though notably, this has only happened after she had used her powers).
Mechanics[]
Echo’s mechanics resemble that of Six’s, in the fact that she can sprint and run but gets tired after sprinting for long periods of time. She can also run faster than [REDACTED] can, though this is presumably because of her longer stride. [REDACTED] can drag her along when she gets tired by holding her hand, allowing/forcing her to sprint at the same speed as he does. She is also notably lesser in strength, being unable to pull off boards [REDACTED] (who is smaller in size) can do so himself. As she is taller than most other Little Nightmares kids, she can reach farther and higher than them and so can access places normal, shorter kids usually cannot reach. However, her size makes traveling through tight spaces harder for her, and [REDACTED] will very often have to clear a path for her to cross in order for her to proceed.
Her umbrella can work in many different ways. For one, it can allow her to jump from high places without getting injured or dying, functioning as a parachute that allows her to glide slowly to the ground. It also allows her to ride up on wind currents. It also functions as a raft that she can use to ride across bodies of water that she would normally have drowned in. Echo can also open it up like a normal umbrella to shield herself from the rain. but that does not contribute to the gameplay and is merely for show.
Her powers seem to be some sort of illusion creating ability, only manifesting when she gets stressed or anxious. This is shown in many boss chase scenes, such as during her escape from The Teacher in The School, where pink-ish illusions burst into being that eventually led The Teacher away from her. In occasional cases, she can control this ability to use it like a tool, such as when she uses illusions to lure [REDACTED] out of his room so that she can save him from the escapist pull of the Signal Tower. However, the more she uses this ability, the more her condition seems to deteriorate; she gets more dazed and unaware of her surroundings, like the spark of life has gone out within her.
- This manifests as her rippling and fading like a mirage, or a reflection on a lake of water. She also becomes a lot more forgetful and unaware of her surroundings, and her stare becomes glassy and unfocused.
- If you talk to her, she will likely not respond, seeming as if she doesn’t notice anything real around her at all.
- She may also see hallucinations herself, and potentially walk/stumble right into danger, lured by what is not there.
The only way you can snap her out of her trance is to cause her physical pain. Oftentimes, [REDACTED] will have to forcefully slap or pinch her on the cheek, or, if it comes to that extent, use nearby wooden boards to hit her. She will shake her head as if she is waking up, and rub her head a little before assuming her normal state again.
Story[]
Not much is known about Echo’s story just yet, though what we do know is as follows:
- She is an asian child who came to the Nowhere in hopes of escaping her tiresome school life which seems to be going nowhere back home.
- She originally came to in The Nest, and escaped by riding on her large umbrella she stole from one of the rooms like a raft.
- She then ended up in the Pale City, and has been there ever since. She wanders the Pale City, keeping out of sight and surviving by stealing stuff from shops and sneaking past viewers.
User Robinlmfaoo has also published a poem-esque literary piece about Echo, and if we follow its story, it roughly translates into the following: Echo was a star child at school, but something happened that caused her to lose focus and fall in her academic performance. She was then tormented by her parents words and laments, which pulled her back to reality “like velcro from its strap”, and that it hurt when it did. One day, after she got back yet another round of disappointing results, fearing her parents scoldings and tired of living like she did, she ran away from home, and got transported to The Nowhere in the process.
